We’ve got a great week of film events ahead!
Tonight at @woodwardtheater, @leontine_cinema continues their series of female-directed cinematic gems with Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird (2017), with an intro from @sarahokeefe23!
On Tuesday night, Woodward Cinema is excited to partner with @cincypalisolidarity to present the powerful new documentary, No Other Land, about an unlikely partnership between a Palestinian activist and an Israeli journalist.
On Wednesday, @wifcincinnati and @filmcincinnati take over the Woodward for Women in Film’s annual holiday party. Admission is free and open to all! Follow the link in @wifcincinnati’s bio to reserve your spot.
The week will be rounded out by special holiday season screenings of Hundreds of Beavers (2022) at @themariemonttheatre and @esquiretheatre, a Friday night screening of John Waters’ Pink Flamingos (1972) at @esquiretheatre, and more repertory film screenings over the weekend.

It’s Thanksgiving week! ๐ฆ
Feels like folks have food on the brain, because we’re working with titles like “Candy Mountain,” (Monday at @woodwardtheater with @conveyor_belt_books), “Thinner” (Tuesday at @themariemonttheatre with @wisenheimerlive), and “Dinner in America” (Friday and Saturday at Garfield Theater with @cincycinema).
Happy Thanksgiving ya dang turkeys! ๐ฆ

A full docket to look forward to in December! ๐โ๏ธ
This will be one of my last months programming films at the Woodward, and I’m excited about what’s on tap. To start the month, @leontine_cinema will present Lady Bird (2017) on December 2nd, which I believe is a top 10 film of the young century. The following night, December 3rd, @cincypalisolidarity will present the new documentary, No Other Land (about the relationship between a Palestinian activist and an Israeli journalist). For the final film at the Woodward for 2024, @voiceblackcincy will present Barry Jenkins first film, Medicine for Melancholy (2008), on Tuesday, December 17 (the same week that Jenkins’ new Disney prequel, Mufasa, opens wide).
Elsewhere, @leontine_cinema (Clueless), @conveyor_belt_books (Eyes Wide Shut), @secretbasecinema (It!), and @oldmanbrad (Don’t Open Before Christmas), will all be in action at the @esquiretheatre. I have to say, I like addition of Eyes Wide Shut to the Christmas cannon. ๐๏ธ๐ Speaking of Christmas, @esquiretheatre, @themariemonttheatre, and @kenwoodtheatre will also host their annual screenings of White Christmas (1954) on Sunday, December 15, and tickets are likely to sell out for that.
Finally, keep an eye out for announcements on “New Years Reeves” - a New Year’s Eve celebration of the great Keanu Reeves! An inspired concept that should make for a can’t miss event.

Looks like a bread and butter week ahead in the Cincy film scene. @woodwardtheater has a music doc on Monday (on Ani DiFranco) and @esquiretheatre showcases two demented film selections from @outercinemacincinnati (Arrebato) and @secretbasecinema (Blood Rage).
This is also the week of “Glicked” (Gladiator 2 + Wicked), 2024’s answer to “Barbenheimer.” Look, any gimmick that can get crowds into movie theaters is good by me. ๐ซก
Lastly, @esquiretheatre has quietly relaunched its daily repertory screening program, which offers a wide selection of film classics on a daily basis.

Film events are expanding beyond our normal venues this week!
@conveyor_belt_books has an intriguing film on Tuesday at @esquiretheatre that I’m looking forward to attending.
Then on Wednesday, just down the street from the v Esquire, @ccaccincinnati has a can’t miss panel, featuring the great @adamsweeney and legendary Cincy casting director, D Lynn Meyers.
On Thursday, @wifcincinnati hosts a happy hour at Veracruz Mexican Grill. Women in Film events are kind of a place where dreams come true, and you won’t want to miss this one if you’re interested in film in Cincinnati.
And finally over the weekend, we have terrific events hosted by @oldmanbrad at the Esquire and @cindependentfilmfestival at @cincycac! See you all at the movies!

I regret to announce that it is now impossible to keep up with all the good movies that are coming out in theaters. ๐ฅฒ
I’m highlighting Anora, Blitz, and Small Things Like These, because I love Sean Baker, Steve McQueen, and Cillian Murphy’s piercing blue eyes. ๐งฟ๐งฟ
I would describe Anora as the Safdies crossed with the Coen bros in madcap mode (I.e. Raising Arizona or Fargo). The film is quippier and goofier than I expected, but it gradually opens up to reveal real emotional breadth and depth. โค๏ธ
Blitz is the return of the Steve McQueen, with the great Saiorse Ronan in the lead role. Technically it’s only his second film since his Oscar win for Twelve Years a Slave 10 years ago (following Widows in 2018). I feel like we’re still deciding if he’s one of our great directors or a good director who made one terrific film. I’d like to lean toward the former.
Finally, I would recommend Small Things Like These as the kind of potent film that you can still feel comfortable watching with your conservative family over the holidays. If nothing else, we can all agree that the Catholics did some bad stuff and Cillian has great cheek bones, right? ๐
Well, it’s undeniably election week, and I believe that Cincy’s film programming this week is in conversation with the moment.
On Monday, @woodwardtheater has a Cincy exclusive screening of Alex Wolff’s new film, The Line - a chaotic journey into the machinations of frat culture. Dare I say, the film speaks to the ills of our sick American society! ๐คฏ
On a Tuesday, the good folks at @opensourcecinemacinci have some charming counter programming for election night at @parprojects - the meditative observational documentary, Peace (2010).
On Wednesday evening, @leontine_cinema brings us Sofia Coppola’s great American saga - The Bling Ring (2013). The screening could provide a pleasant escape from the election result tab refreshing that we’ll likely be in the midst of.
Friday through Sunday, @outreelscincinnati returns for their annual LGBTQ+ film festival at Warsaw Incline Theater. A wonderful weekend of stories worth celebrating!
And @cincycinema at the Garfield Theater is also back in action this weekend, with screenings of new release gems, Chronicles of a Wandering Saint on November 8 & 10 and Matt and Mara on November 9th.
Finally, @woodwardtheater will present a special screening of Kelly Reichardt’s First Cow (2020) on Sunday evening. ๐ฎโค๏ธ
